Cooper on its way to 2nd place behind the Ferrari Dino
The
last VSCC race meeting at Silverstone was unpopular for sharing the event with
the Historic Sports Car Club and so it was with some trepidation that people
arrived at Donington to an event shared with 25 Ferraris and Maseratis entered
in the Ferrari Challenge and housed in the pits. They need not have worried – it worked well and despite losing
the top paddock to large Ferrari transporters – the loyal VSCC competitors
grouped in the lower paddock and displayed their cars for all to see.
The VSCC had heeded previous criticism and signing-on and scrutineering were fast. The event ran well despite a tight timetable and the racing was competitive with hardly any red flags. There were plenty of F1 Grand Prix cars which were driven with verve around the circuit and could be seen ‘close-to’ in the pit garages - and - there were photo opportunities with Murray Walker, Sid Watkins and Tom Wheatcroft.

Too
much sunshine (!), lots of picnics and camaraderie, super motorbikes, an
excellent selection of vintage cars and a good drinks party with TOPS on
Saturday evening, where all members who came were given a great number of
splendid clothes by our Road Map sponsors – all in all an enjoyable
weekend.
